COMMON TEST METHODS USED?

acid tests

Acid Tests

- Determine the approximate concentration of gold. It does not tell the actual gold concentratio
- Very subjective and prone to user erro
- Can be fooled by acid resistant materials e.g stainless steel (NiCrMo) passed off as white gold
- Essentially tests the "skin" only through a physical scratch made on a black stone.

 

Fire Assay (Lab based method)

- Requires a piece of gold chosen for analysis to be physically cut off (eg from a piece of jewellery) or for gold bars physically drilling into the bar at preferably various points to collect the filling

The fire assay technique is a destructive technique that essentially involves melting the collected gold material at around 1000 deg
- It only quantifies gold accurately
- The method is complex destructive slow and labour intensive.
