A hybrid orchid between the Burmese Vanda teres and the Malayan Vanda Hookeriana, the Vanda (Miss Joaquim) was bred by horticulturist Agnes Joaquim and chosen as Singapore national flower in 1981. Vanda Miss Joaquim was also selected as the national flower due to its hardy and resilient qualities, and its unique trait of blooming throughout the year.
